FREE workshop for young people aged 12-18.
Where is the most interesting of all places?
Somewhere else!
In this quick introduction to travel writing as a genre, we'll share a map of the landscape as we see it, and hopefully provide some useful terrain knowledge for the journeys you'll soon be embarking upon. We'll run through some simple and effective writing exercises - just a few sentences long -- and load up our backpacks with tools for the adventures that lie ahead.
* A brief history of travel writing as a modern publishing genre
* Travel memoir vs geographical reporting vs tourism editorial
* Can you do travel writing at home?
* Who are you writing for?
* Generational changes in travel writing
* Imagery: from pencils to film to digital to video
* A history of people getting paid for travel writing
About the presenter: YD Bar-Ness is a conservation journalist and outreach ecologist based in the far corner of Australasia, on the island of Tasmania. He has previously been based in Delhi, Seattle, Perth, San Francisco, and Bangalore. He is on a long term mission searching for the Kalpavriksh, the mythical wish-fulfilling tree of ancient Sanskritic myth. He hasn't found it yet, but will make sure to tell you when he does.
