The Emerging Tasmanian Aboriginal Writers Award

The Emerging Tasmanian Aboriginal Writers Award (ETAWA) provides professional feedback from judges and a financial prize given by the Tasmanian State Government.

This genre for the submissions alternates between prose and poetry. 2021 was poetry.

Hidden Stories

The Hidden Stories project aims to provide a platform and support for emerging Tasmanian Aboriginal writers to tell their stories and build confidence in their ability to do so.

Hidden Stories Workshops:  A few weeks before the ETAWA opened in 2021, four, free, writing workshops were held online for any members of the Aboriginal community who wished to attend. These were very well received by the participants who, if they wished, could also participate in mentoring sessions with one of the workshop presenters in the weeks following.

This project is a celebration of Tasmanian Aboriginal stories. Island magazine included the winning pieces from ETAWA 2021 in Issue 163. We thank all the staff and Board of Island Magazine for their partnership in this project.
