Working with Point of View, Perspective and Voice

A Mechanics of Story workshop with Rosie Dub

Point of view is the lens through which a story is told. First person, second, third, close-up, distant, witness . . . whether we’re writing fiction writing or narrative non-fiction, every story requires us to make choices regarding point of view, but also perspective and voice. Whose eyes do we want to tell our story through? How much do they know? Are they telling the truth? And what unique perspective does each character bring to a story?

Through discussion, readings and writing exercises we’ll explore a range of points of view and perspectives, create an unreliable narrator and experiment with creating a compelling and characterful narrative voice.

Dr Rosie Dub is the author of two novels, 'Flight' and 'Gathering Storm', which is being adapted for screen. Her short fiction and life writing have been widely published in Australia and the UK.

For the past twenty years, Rosie has been working as a mentor, manuscript assessor and teacher of creative writing, running workshops and courses on all aspects of creative writing at introductory and advanced levels. For four years she worked as a Creative Writing Fellow at Aberystwyth University in Wales, supervising PhD students and teaching MA students. She also teaches on the online MA in Writing program at Swinburne University in Melbourne.

Rosie is also the facilitator of Centre for Story, a platform for reimagining the world through story. She has spent many years researching the nature of story and the role it plays as a transformational tool for individuals and cultures and she shares her discoveries in her blog and the wide range of writing workshops and courses she runs in the UK and Australia.
